What was once a horse-traveled trail has been repaired and redesigned with a modern yogi twist. The Mount Dewey Trail, stretching up the peaks of Green Mountain Falls, Colorado, climbs one mile of lush forestry and adventurous hiking territory to an elevation of 8,459 feet. Although hiking might intimidate the rookie trailblazer, the Historic Green Mountain Falls Foundation has set out to motivate trail and nature enthusiasts alike to consider meditation as part of their journey.

Since the trail’s official opening last summer, HGMFF architect Dick Bratton and Green Mountain Falls Trails Committee members have thoughtfully planned and chosen the perfect spot for nature watching and reflection. The Spiritual Platform, opening along the Mount Dewey Trail this summer, will offer hikers a resting place surrounded by natural beauty. Outfitted with a community bench as well as floor space designated for yoga mats, the Spiritual Platform is a space for meditation, spiritual reflection, and quiet relaxation.

Facing the southeast, the platform’s view sets a frame for the sunrise and provides an overlook of the town whose buildings meander through the valley. Because the platform is only one quarter of a mile into the trail, Bratton says ambitious morning yogis can start their day enlightened and still get to work on time.

“Below their feet lies the entirety of Green Mountain Falls,” Bratton says, “including Ute Pass Valley, the cliffs, and ramparts of the trail. I envision this space to have many uses.” Yoga, meditation, relaxation, and perhaps even a small wedding are just a few that come to mind, he says.
